Effective e-Teaching and Learning

E-teaching and E-learning methods and tools can greatly facilitate teachers offering courses in formal engineering programmes.  However, their usage demands systematic instruction design of courses, preparation of multimedia learning objects as per chosen instructional methods, and delivering the content to learners through an appropriate learning management system.

International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIITB) is offering “Effective E-Teaching and Learning” courses that would facilitate teachers to create e-learning content for undergraduate engineering courses and effectively deliver them using the learning management system MOODLE.   These courses aim at enabling the teachers to

  • Create resources for a course on MOODLE
  • Conduct different instructional activities related to a course on MOODLE.
  • Design a course systematically
  • Design tests that are challenging and fair, and a grading system that provides positive motivation for learning without lowering standards.
  • Prepare learning material based on the principles of effective e-learning using Latex and Adobe tools, and make them SCORM compatible

Guided active learning is the dominant instruction method used in these courses.  More than 60% of the time would be dedicated to practice and creative exercises.  Most of the exercises will be group activities.  It is expected that all the participants would eventually become members of a community of practitioners whose activities will be facilitated by IIITB.

The first offering of this course was held from 19th January to 13th February 2009 and second was offered from 29th June to 24th July 2009. Teachers of Departments offering formal programmes in IT related disciplines (Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering) had participated in this course.  All the participants were provided accommodation and hospitality at IIIT, Bangalore.  Their travel expenses will be covered by IIIT.

These courses are organized under the project “Train the Trainer” funded by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India.
