IIIT Bangalore ACM SIGCHI Student Chapter launched

 

Bengaluru Jan 25, 2023: The Student Chapter of IIIT Bangalore ACM SIGCHI was launched today at the institute campus and online via zoom with inaugural talks by Amit Chowdhury, Head of Design at Samsung Bangalore, Satish Patil, head of UX team focussed on wearable, Smart Home and AI led Smart Phone experiences at Samsung Research and  Biju Neyyan, team leader of talented designers at Samsung Research Bangalore,

The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) brings together computing educators, researchers, and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources, and address the field's challenges. As the world’s largest computing society, ACM strengthens the profession's collective voice through strong leadership, promotion of the highest standards, and recognition of technical excellence. ACM supports the professional growth of its members by providing opportunities for life‐long learning, career development, and professional networking.

The ACM Special Interest Group for Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) Student Chapter aims to engage students in thinking about technology design beyond interfaces and cosmetic software developments and include human experiences and aspirations as well. The efforts of ACM SIGCHI is geared towards nurturing students into becoming conscious designers and researchers. This transformational journey would include discussions, tutorials, workshops and much more that would enrich their perspective towards design. The student chapter believes this would give a 360-degree world view of how systems work and what relevance design hold.

The ACM SIGCHI Student Chapter is launching its chapter activities with a monthly series called drag {design} drop {tech} that comprises talks, workshops, and field visits from industry professionals as well as academics.

 

About the Industry Professionals:

Amit Chowdhury is the Head of Design at Samsung Bangalore, where he leads one of the largest tech product design team in India. His team focuses on creating meaningful and delightful mobile experiences through the use of cutting-edge technology such as Visual Computing, AI, Voice, IoT, 5G. He has over 20 years of experience in designing software products and building design teams at large MNC software R&D centers in India. Prior to Samsung, he spent a decade plus at Microsoft India where he was the first designer and went on to build the central design team. He is a graduate of the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad, where he received his degree in Industrial Design.

Satish Patil leads UX team focussed on wearable, SmartHome and AI led Smart Phone experiences at Samsung Research. Since joining Samsung, he’s been engaged in building innovative User experience in daily lives of users working closely at the intersection of design and technologies like AI, IoT and wearables. He focusses on building connected intelligent experiences to simplify users’ life. Prior to joining Samsung, Satish was instrumental in building Tata Elxsi’s design studio and established research and digital design practices working across Automotive, Medical and consumer electronics domains. He studied Product design at IDC, IIT Bombay.

Biju Neyyan leads a team of talented designers at Samsung Research Bangalore, specializing in Voice and Multimodal Interactions. He’s been engaged in the design of conversational experiences for the Samsung device ecosystem enabling users to interact with technology through natural language. Before joining Samsung he worked at Mudra Communications Mumbai, focusing on Design strategy & Advertising; and at SOBHA Developers Bangalore, as an Architect. He has a Bachelor's in Architecture from the School of Architecture, GEC Thrissur, Master's in Visual Design from IDC, IIT Bombay, and participated in the 2008 DIMI (Design Innovation Made in Italy) scholarship program at Politecnico di Milano.
