December is the last month of the year. This month we are looking back at what we did in the year and to bid goodbye to 2013. Before saying goodbye, we are glad to tell you that all our Mtech 2nd year students have got internship and have already started. We were visited by Airbus global team, a delegation from Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) and a few others. With all these memories we welcome New Year 2014 with lots of goals and aspirations and wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous year ahead.

Neha Oraon presented a paper on "Self assembly based 3D heatsink antenna for high density 3D integration" in IEEE International conference on Circuits, Controls and Communication 2013 held in Bangalore on 27-28 December, 2013. The work is a collaborative research effort of IIIT-B and IISc research group.

Attended the International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries held during December 9-11, 2013 at Bangalore. The main theme of the conference was Social Media and Community Networks with focus on digital libraries.  The conference touched upon the various aspects of social media networks and the utilization of this in the information retrieval and dissemination. Discussed the various hurdles and drawbacks in disseminating the scholarly information over community networks and stressed upon to develop models to overcome these short comings. The conference laid emphasis on the importance of security and privacy of the information while using the community networks and judicial usage of the social media and community networks in data storage and utilization.

Prof. Steven Walsh, Distinguished and Regents Professor at the University of New Mexico Institute Professor for the Entrepreneurial Renewal of Industry at the University of Twente is presenting a talk on Cyber Security and the Cloud, New Dimension and challenges for 21st century Quality Management on December 27, 2013.

Talk by Prof. Steven Walsh, Prof. University of Mexico and University of Twente

1) "Adaptive K-Space Sampling Design for Edge-Enhanced DCE-MRI Using Compressed Sensing", by Prof. Neelam Sinha and Rajikha Raja, accepted for publication in the journal Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Elsevier publishers.

The critical challenge in Dynamic Contrast Enhanced-Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) is the trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution due to the limited availability of acquisition time. To address this, it is imperative to under-sample k-space and to develop specific reconstruction techniques. Our proposed method reconstructs high quality images from under-sampled dynamic k-space data by proposing 2 main improvements; i) design of an adaptive k-space sampling lattice and ii) Edge-Enhanced reconstruction technique.

2) “Classification of essential tremors (ET) disorder and healthy controls using a masking technique”, by Prof. Neelam Sinha, Rakshatha P. K, Jitender Saini and Pramod Kumar Pal, accepted for publication in the SPIE Medical Imaging conference 2014 which will be held in San Diego, California USA, during February 16-20, 2014.

In this study we propose a masking technique to build a Resting State fMRI classifier to discriminate between healthy controls and patients suffering from the Essential Tremors (ET) disorder. Distinction between healthy controls and diseased subject′s data using RS fMRI is more useful in light of the fact that certain patients suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders may be unable to perform certain cognitive tasks.

3)"Characterization of White and Gray Matters in Healthy Brain: An in-vivo Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging Study ", by Prof. Neelam Sinha, Rajikha Raja, and Jitender Saini, accepted for publication in IEEE CONECCT 2014 Conference Proceedings, which will be held in IISc, Bangalore, during January 6-7, 2014.

In this study, we focus on finding the correlation between DTI and DKI parameters for characterizing the brain regions such as White Matter (WM) and Gray Matter (GM) of healthy human brain. The data obtained from DKI scans on 10 healthy volunteers are used in this study. Parameters such as Mean Kurtosis (MK) and Fractional Anisotropy (FA) were estimated for the two brain regions, WM and GM. Correlation analysis was performed between MK and FA in WM and GM. Significant differences in correlation results were observed for WM and GM. These preliminary findings indicate that this correlation measure could be used to characterize WM and GM regions in normal human brain.

Balaji Parthasarathy delivered a talk on "Production in India to Innovation from India: The evolution of R&D off-shoring in the Information and Communications Technology services industry' at the international symposium on Innovation in Comparison: India and China, hosted by Ryukoku Univeristy, Kyoto, on 30th November

Balaji Parthasarathy presented a paper titled "From Infomediaries to Infomediation on at Public Access Venues: Lessons from a 3-Country Study" at the Sixth International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development, held in Cape Town between 7th and 10th December. The paper was co-authored with Ricardo Ramirez of the University of Guelph, and Andrew Gordon of the University of Washington, Seattle.

Doctoral student Anjali Mohan presented a paper titled "Credibility, accountability and transparency in local service delivery? The helpline and Aasthi in Karnataka, India" at the Sixth International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development, held in Cape Town between 7th and 10th December. The paper was co-authored with Edward Cutrell of Microsoft Research, and Balaji Parthasarathy of IIITB.

The Center for Information Technology and Public Policy (CITAPP) hosted the workshop "Reverse globalization: ICT services from India to Europe" on 13th and 14th December 2013.
The workshop was anchored by Balaji Parthasarathy and Amit Prakash on behalf of IIITB, and Brita Hermelin (Linkoping University) and Harko Varhagen (Stockholm University) on the Swedish side. A dozen representatives from academia and industry took part in the workshop that will be the basis for a larger multi-year project between IIITB, Linkoping University and Stockholm University.

We are delighted to announce that our 2nd year M Tech students have begun their internship program in right earnest. They have entered their final lap and approaching their graduation. Congratulations to the Class of 2014

Our Faculty members Prof. G Srinivasa Raghavan, Prof. Sujit Kumar Chakrabarti (and Prof Meenakshi D'Souza, the earlier faculty in charge of placement) as well as Mr. DV Jagadish, CEO, Outreach and Ms Divya Shivanna must be thanked for their continuous efforts. I express my gratitude to our Industry partners for making this happen once again this year (as in every year in the past 14 years), particularly when the economy and industry are going through a difficult time.

We had some distinguished visitors from Airbus Industries and Talinn University of Technology (the only Technical University in Estonia) in December 2013; we expect to increase our Industry and Academic partnerships through their visits.

As bid adieu to 2013 and herald the arrival of the New Year 2014, let me wish each and every one of IIITB family a very Happy New Year.
