IIIT-Bangalore celebrated National Space Day 2025 with a day filled with curiosity, discovery, and excitement, organised by the ECLIPSE Astronomy Club. The event brought together students from across the campus to experience the wonders of astronomy through insightful talks, interactive displays, and engaging activities.

The celebrations began with a captivating session by Dr. Prasanna Deshmukh, Engineer-D at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, a specialist in astronomical instrumentation and telescope control systems. Dr. Deshmukh spoke with great passion about telescopes – their design, types, and the vital role they play in advancing our understanding of the universe. He not only explained how telescopes work and what makes each type unique, but also shared insights into ambitious projects currently underway across the world. He also highlighted where India stands in this global effort and how Indian scientists continue to make meaningful contributions.

One of the most memorable moments was when Dr. Deshmukh illustrated the immense effort behind building a telescope, from the enormous cost of crafting a single mirror to the extraordinary precision and expertise required at every stage of its construction. His talk gave students a rare glimpse into the dedication and innovation behind instruments that allow humanity to look deeper into the cosmos.

Following the session, Prof. Shivakumar Malapaka, faculty mentor of ECLIPSE, presented a memento to Dr. Deshmukh as a token of our gratitude. To make the day even more special, ECLIPSE showcased IIIT-B’s own telescope, allowing students to see the instrument up close and view striking images captured through it. This hands-on display sparked lively conversations and deepened interest in observational astronomy.

The celebrations concluded on a vibrant note with an Astronomy Quiz, jointly conducted by ECLIPSE and QuizSoc. The quiz featured four exciting rounds, blending challenging concepts with fun trivia. The atmosphere was charged with energy as students discussed answers, cheered for their peers, and celebrated each round with enthusiasm.

By the end of the day, National Space Day 2025 at IIIT-Bangalore had become more than just an event – it was a celebration of scientific spirit, shared curiosity, and the joy of discovery. The talk, the telescope showcase, and the quiz left students inspired and curious, encouraging them to keep looking up at the night sky with interest and wonder.
