The 73rd Independence Day celebration at IIITB campus in Electronic City was not just about tricolor hoisting and national anthem sung in unison! The campus was home to over 25 children from Surabhi Foundation Trust, an orphanage in Bengaluru. The kids spent their Independence Day on the campus with the students of IIITB.
“We invited these kids from Surabhi Foundation Trust as they do not have an event of their own. The kids celebrated the day with us, played games, savoured sweets went back with gifts to make this day memorable. The idea is to provide them a window to the outside world and to help them understand that hard work and dedication can take them to an institute like IIITB,” said Rishikesh RK, a fourth year iMTech student at IIITB and the coordinator of Aikyam club on the campus.
An initiative taken by the students of IIITB, Aikyam has been a part of the institute since 2008. The club helps poor children in building a happier and brighter future.
“These children are from underprivileged background. They do not know much about importance of education. While they are learning it all at Surabhi, we wanted them to get exposure here at IIITB,” said Mangala Metri, educational advisor, Surabhi Foundation Trust.
The day also witnessed cultural programs from IIITB students and children from Surabhi Foundation Trust. Tree plantation activity was also organized on the campus under HRD ministry’s new campaign, "One Student One Tree".
